Automotive engineers design vehicle systems and automobiles. To become an automotive engineer, you can follow one of two engineering disciplines in college: mechanical engineering or automotive technology engineering. Automotive engineers are also responsible for designing cars that use alternative sources of fuel. When you have a passion for designing or working on automobiles, an automotive engineering career might be the right choice. An affinity for advanced mathematics is critical to any type of automotive engineering classes.

Step 1

Take classes during high school in automotive shop. Taking physics courses and advanced mathematics also helps with understanding math used in structural design.

Step 2

Graduate from high school with better than a 3.0 GPA so you have a better chance of going to the engineering school of your choice.

Research accredited colleges that offer automotive and mechanical engineering degree programs. Choose an accredited school to ensure a good education and to get better chances for employment.

Step 4

Pass the college entrance exams required for the college you want to attend with high scores in math.

Work hard and study to pass all your college classes with higher than 3.0 GPA. Take computer classes that teach design using computer-aided programs.

Step 6

Obtain work in the automotive industry while you are going to college to gain hands-on experience. Companies in the automotive industry prefer employees who have a well-rounded education combined with experience.

Step 7

Apply for an internship with an automotive-related company during your junior or senior year of college. An internship with a recognized or large automotive corporation provides needed and valuable on-the-job experience.

Step 8

Graduate from college with a bachelor's degree in mechanical or automotive technology engineering.

Step 9

Join a professional association for automotive engineers during college or after graduation. This group allows you to network with other engineers. It keeps you abreast of the changes in the job marketplace as well as putting you in contact with other automotive companies. An association network also presents the opportunities and contacts for new job openings.

Step 10

Prepare your resume and include all related work experience. Include any special honors you received during college. Obtain letters of recommendation from former employers.

Step 11

Look for work in the automotive engineering field. Automotive engineering also includes all the support industries and vendors that supply automotive manufacturers with parts and auto supplies.

Step 12

Consider pursuing an advanced degree in engineering after obtaining at least two years of work experience. An advanced degree provides you opportunities to work for automobile manufacturers.
